The striking thing in this verse is their overall agreement with each other. Remember, we are talking about the "whole earth" here, not just a group of people. They said what they were going to do, they agreed with each other and got to doing it. There wasn't much complaint, if any, there wasn't much argument, if any, seems to me they were in total and complete agreement with the idea. This is unbelievable! When you think of the fact that it wasn't just a group of people, but all the people in the whole earth were of the same mind and purpose. This is what they wanted to do and they were going to do it, period. They first began by communicating the thing in which they were to build and being of one speech and of one language they didn't really have any difficulty in attacking the task, did they? In language, when one is communicating to another and they both have the same understanding of the words being spoken there is a harmony, an agreement, that can't be broken. This is the realm of perfect communication. They saw this, joined in this, and were going to make sure they stayed this way. That was the idea and the goal of the whole project. It was to stay in unity, so they wouldn't be scattered. It must have been quite enjoyable to live this way. So much so, they were building a city and a tower whose top was reaching into the very heavens. So much so, God noticed this and He decided to take a peek at it for Himself. Now let's look at what He thinks about all this, from verse five and six. GENESIS 11:5,6
(KJV)
(The Living Bible)
He said, "Look! If they are able to accomplish all this when they have just begun
to exploit their linguistic and political unity, just think of what they will do later!
Nothing will be unattainable for them!"
(The Berkeley Version)
Look! One people and all with one language! The way they are starting to behave,
nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them…
(The Jerusalem Bible)
"So they are all a single people with a single language!" said Yahweh, "This
is but the start of their undertakings! There will be nothing too hard for them to do…"
(New International Version)
The LORD said, "If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to
do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them…
I don't know what is more amazing, the fact people of the whole earth were one in speech and language, or the fact that God Himself was so surprised He said that nothing, from here on in, would be impossible for them! |
