The message I am seeing below is one of war, yes, that's what it looks like to me. With all this talk about weapons and warfare going on these verses cannot mean anything else. Doesn't it sound like that to you? What else could it mean? We are in a war. A war between two worlds. 2 CORINTHIANS 10:3-5
(KJV)
3 For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh:
4 (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;)
5 Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;
(TLB)
It is true that I am an ordinary, weak human being, but I don't use human plans and methods to win my battles
I use God's mighty weapons, not those made by men, to knock down the devil's strongholds.
These weapons can break down every proud argument against God and every wall that can be built to keep men from finding him. With these weapons I can capture rebels and bring them back to God and change them into men whose hearts' desire is obedience to Christ.
(Hayman)
For, although we move in the secular sphere, our warfare has no secular objective; and indeed our service-weapons are not secular, but powerful for God to the overthrow of hostile positions
and reduce every stronghold which would tower above the knowledge of God; and thus carry captive every conceit of man into submission to Christ
(Locke)
Beating down human reasonings, and all the towering and most elevated superstructures raised thereon, by the wit of men, against the knowledge of God, captivating all their notions, and bringing them into subjection to Christ
(Bruce)
Admittedly I live in this world, but that does not mean that I fight my battles with worldly weapons.
The weapons I use for fighting are not of this world; but they are powerful in God's hands for the demolition of strongholds
with them I overthrow lofty imaginations and everything that is high and lifted up against the knowledge of God; with them I take prisoner the minds of all and force them to render allegiance to Christ
(Cressman)
of course we are living in bodies made of this world. But we are not fighting for the things in this world.
We do not use the things of this world in our fighting, but we use the power of God. This power can break down the walls where the enemy hides
We can break down what people think and every big idea that tries to stop people from knowing God. And we can make every thought a prisoner to obey Christ
There are two worlds fighting against each other here. One world is physical and soulish, carnal. "Admittedly I live in this world, but that does not mean that I fight my battles with worldly weapons." The other world is of the spirit, spiritual. "The weapons I use for fighting are not of this world". |
