Form Of God

This is fantastic, now I can go on from here strengthened from within, by the refreshing Word of the living God. What a blessing of God Life from the Lord! Come on and let us take an in-depth look at this next passage. There are some very important things here in this scripture that have been missed and/or passed over for quite some time. It is of the utmost importance for us to grasp the significance of how all these things of God do truly work. This, in turn, when understood from the right perspective will give us clear comprehension in His ways and His thoughts. But first you know where we are going don't you.

It's dictionary time!

FORM  —(Vine's Expository Dictionary of Biblical Words)
Greek: tupos
"the representation or pattern" of anything (for which see ENSAMPLE), is rendered "form" in , "that form (or mold) of teaching whereunto ye were delivered," RV. The metaphor is that of a cast or frame into which molten material is poured so as to take its shape. The Gospel is the mould; those who are obedient to its teachings become conformed to Christ, whom it presents.
FORMGreek: tupos—(Thayer's Greek Lexicon)
1. the mark of a stroke or blow, a print
2. a figure formed by a blow or impression
a) used of a figure or image
b) used of the image of the gods
3. form:
the teaching which embodies the sum and substance of religion and represents it to the mind, the manner of writing, the contents and form of a letter
4. an example:
a) in the technical sense, the pattern in conformity to which a thing must be made
c) an example to be imitated; used of people who are worthy of imitation
d) in a doctrinal sense; used of a type, that is, a person or thing prefiguring a future (Messianic) person or a thing

Let us look into the scriptures to see where this word "Form" is used.

ROMANS 6:17
(KJV)
But God be thanked, that ye were the servants of sin, but ye have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine which was delivered you.
(Weymouth)
But thanks be to God that though you were once in thralldom to Sin, you have now yielded a hearty obedience to that system of truth in which you have been instructed.
(Schoenfield)
But God be thanked that though you were slaves of sin you have since obeyed from he heart that model of teaching which has been transmitted to you
(Locke)
But God be thanked that you who were the vassals of sin, have sincerely, and from the heart, obeyed, so as to receive the form, or be cast into the mould of that doctrine, under whose direction or regulation you were put
(Doddridge)
But thanks be to God, that whereas you were once the servants of sin, this is to be spoken of as a bondage past and gone; and that ye have now obeyed, not in profession alone, but from the heart, the model of doctrine into which ye were delivered as into a mould; that your whole temper and life might be formed and fashioned into an amiable and glorious correspondence with it
(Weekes)
But thanks be to God, that, though ye were once servants of sin, ye have now become obedient from the heart to the pattern of teaching unto which ye were moulded;

Now for a little extra emphasis, here are a few "snippets" from what some of the translators had to say of this particular verse:

Richard Weymouth: have yielded; more exactly "have begun to yield" - system of truth = "model of teaching"

John Wesley: intimating that our minds, all pliant and ductile, should be conformed to the gospel precepts, as liquid metals take the figure of the mould into which they are cast

Jerusalem Bible: "creed you were taught" - creed = Authoritative doctrinal formula; a system of religious belief

Philip Doddridge: "model of doctrine" - melted metal being formed by the mould into which it is poured

William R. Newell: our becoming obedient from the heart to the word of the cross. Believers now are delivered over to a form or pattern of teaching. Summarily, this is the Gospel—particularly the work of Christ on the Cross

Henry P. Liddon: into which, as a spiritual mould, Christians were delivered by God's providence, to be shaped by it to the outlines of a New Life

F. Godet: type, form = which denotes an image deeply engraved, and pitted to reproduce its impress

F. C. Cook: Christian teaching a "a mould into which we are put to be fashioned to its shape"

Wordsworth: the Christian life consists in having Christ's image formed in the soul and in displaying it visibly in the life
